If you’re looking to make long cross-country flights, you’ll be exhausted hanging onto the stick all day and you’ll have to land for fuel every 90 minutes or so. This is an aircraft that requires you to pay attention. Its short fuselage and stubby, relatively highly loaded wings give you an airplane that responds to the slightest control input, whether on or off a runway. This is not an airplane for sloppy pilots. It simply does exactly what you tell it to, immediately.”Īnd that is a perfect description of the airplane’s handling characteristics. He replied, “ The Pitts is not ‘squirrelly’ at all in fact, it’s the opposite of ‘squirrelly’. I asked Aviat owner Stu Horn about the Pitts’ reputation for “squirrelly” handling. The Pitts Special is currently built by Aviat Aircraft in Afton, Wyoming (the same factory that builds the backcountry-purposed Husky). But with the small, lightweight, purpose-built Pitts coupled to a powerful engine, you get an aircraft that can simply power its way straight up, taking aerobatic flight to the next level. Sure, you can do akro in an old Stearman or Waco but that means diving for enough airspeed to be able to pull the airplane through a maneuver. Mention aerobatics and air shows to almost anyone and the first image that comes to mind is usually a small, brightly-painted biplane-the Pitts Special. This customer really appreciates those small attentions to detail….Please convey to all those who assisted me today in dis-assembling my aircraft….The Pitts Special remains the quintessential aerobatic performer, especially in the eyes of the general public.

I just wanted you to know that I am extremely pleased so far with your service!Īnd thanks again to the guys who went right out and covered my aircraft with plastic to keep it protected while other aircraft were being worked on in the area. you have a great bunch of folks at your shop, ‘taking care of business’. I am still amazed and in awe of the entire operation/production I witnessed today … everyone working their ‘tails’ off and getting it done! The planes that were outside on the ramp which you recently painted were remarkable works of art and a true testament to the pride you guys take in painting aircraft. You guys treated me wonderfully, were helpful in providing tools I had forgotten to pack, and answered all my questions without hesitation.

Everyone I encountered in the ’shop’ from your son Sean, John the A&P, and the young lady laying out striping on wheel pants, were the friendliest, most professional individuals I have ever met. arrived back in Camarillo, CA (262 NM) about 1.5 hrs later. Departed your shop and Kingman today at 1500…. Hi Rick, Mary and entire staff at Straube’s Aircraft Service. Please thank everyone who put hands on her…from beginning to end. It really was a great process and I do deeply appreciate your collective efforts. Take some pride in knowing the hard work will touch many. It is a symbol of their service to state and nation and you guys were such a big part of that. It has always been about the men and women of the Arizona Air National Guard: past, present, and future. This endeavor was never about me getting to fly a cool 1950’s jet. We have received a ton of compliments on the airplane already. From updates to phone calls and videos….your collective efforts turned out an absolutely stunning airplane….just stunning. From beginning to end, this has been such a great process. Your reputation made it an easy choice as did your efforts to work with us. From the very beginning of this project, I wanted an Arizona company involved and it became clear early on that it would be you. I am not exactly sure where to begin but a good place would be to offer a sincere thanks for the work all of you did.
